I will attempt to meld your 3 responses into 1 of my own … we appear to be dancing around this subject — sometimes we waltz — sometimes we fox-trot — but not at the same time. Exo "So I said, I will bring you up out of the affliction of Egypt to the land of the Canaanite and the Hittite and the Amorite and the Perizzite and the Hivite and the Jebusite, to a land flowing with milk and honey.
Exo "And they will pay heed to what you say; and you with the elders of Israel will come to the king of Egypt, and you will say to him, 'The LORD, the God of the Hebrews, has met with us. So now, please, let us go a three days' journey into the wilderness, that we may sacrifice to the LORD our God. Again, this is an English translation so we have to clarify some things, i.
There are no capital letters in Hebrew nor in Arabic so elohim is a true generic word. The significance of elohim is determined by its use in context just like the capitalization of God in English. No, no, no, the gods have names and the name of the god of Islam is Allah. Mohammad came to the Arabs representing a god they already knew by the name Allah. But if we make a literal translation, then the reader in another language that is unfamiliar with the idiom will not know what I was communicating.
Thus accurate translation should be concerned about the literal meaning of the words, the customs of the people, their style of communicating, idioms commonly used, etc. As one example; In general Hebrew can be a very poetic language where an ideal is expressed, but it is not understood by the Hebrew listener as necessarily factual, only a poetic expression of what is ideally desired. But many times we, the English reader, when not understanding that will take clearly understood words, properly translated, and completely mis the meaning because they have no idea about the poetic nature.
And not understanding that creates a plethora of contradictions etc. My point is that there is much more to translational work then the merely making literal translations. For those who really want to know more on this I recommend a book By D.
